Starting a new career isn’t easy, and real estate can be especially daunting. For now, take a deep breath and relax. We’ve gathered some great tips for new agents (and great refreshers for old pros).
Here are a few great ways to start and build a sustainable career as a real estate agent:
1. Find a mentor.
It helps to have an experienced professional on hand to provide guidance (no matter what stage of your career you’re in). A mentor is someone you feel comfortable with, who communicates well and doesn’t mind answering questions. A more experienced agent can provide advice, share knowledge and provide access to valuable resources.
2. Create a vision board.
A curated collection of inspirational words and images serves as a daily reminder of your goals, values and intentions. With a vision board displayed prominently in your office, you’ll never lose sight of the big picture.
3. Write a business plan.
A written business plan should define how you plan to make your vision a reality. Put your mission statement and your long-term goals in writing, and outline the necessary steps for success. Include milestones that allow you to track your progress — and don’t forget the budget.
4. Develop a marketing plan.
Consider how you’ll approach an email newsletter, your social media presence and your website. And don’t forget traditional marketing materials such as flyers and yard signs. A diverse approach will help you reach a larger audience.
5. Get comfortable prospecting.
Talking to complete strangers can be intimidating at first but gets easier with practice. When cold calling, avoid written scripts and memorized dialogue. You don’t want to sound like a telemarketer.
Instead, ask questions, actively listen and have a real conversation. This helps build rapport and lays the groundwork for a genuine relationship.
